Top 6 Age Estimation Services for Online Stores in 2026

Intro

If you sell alcohol, vapes, knives or anything else with an age limit, you can't skip the age check. It has to sit somewhere between the cart and the order confirmation. And every shopper who gives up at that step is someone you've already paid to bring in, through search or paid ads.

That's where selfie-based age estimation comes in. The shopper takes a quick selfie, a model estimates their age, and most adults are through in a few seconds without digging out their wallet. All six services below do some version of this. Where they differ is what happens when someone looks close to the age limit, what data they hold on to, and how much work they'll ask of your developers. Here's how they compare if you're the one running the store.

What to look at before you pick one

On a product page, most age estimation services sound pretty similar. The real differences show up in the flow, so these are the questions worth asking each provider:

  • How long does an obvious adult wait for a result?
  • What happens when someone's estimate lands close to the age limit?
  • Does the fallback happen in the same session, or does it send the shopper somewhere else?
  • What data does the provider keep once the check is done?
  • How does it plug into your store: a platform app, a no-code link, or an API your developers build against?

The first three questions decide most of the hit (or lack of one) to your conversion rate. If a 40-year-old regular gets stopped and asked for a passport, that's the same kind of friction as any pointless form field. So the usual advice on improving your checkout conversion rate applies here just as much as it does to shipping forms or forced sign-ups.

The ranking below is based on how well each service answers those questions for a typical online store. They're all credible options, and the right one for you depends on your platform and on how many of your customers sit close to the age limit.

1. iDenfy

iDenfy's age estimation works around a buffer that sits above the legal limit. You pick the limit (18+, 21+ or Challenge 25, for example) and then add a margin on top. Anyone clearly older than the limit plus that margin passes on the selfie alone, usually in under a second, and anyone clearly underage is turned away.

The interesting part is what happens to everyone in between. With this age estimation service, a shopper whose estimate lands inside the buffer is moved to a quick document check in the same session and on the same integration, so you don't need a second vendor or a second flow just to handle young adults who happen to look close to the limit. They stay in one checkout step instead of being bounced to an email link or asked to download an app.

Passive and active liveness checks run on the selfie to catch printed photos and deepfakes, and the capture screen guides shoppers on face position, sharpness and lighting before the picture is taken. By default, you only get back an age-group result, with no raw biometrics or facial templates. You can keep nothing at all, or keep the selfie for as long as you decide. And if a customer has already done a full identity check with you, they can be re-confirmed from that record instead of starting over.

On the technical side, there's a REST API, native iOS and Android SDKs, an embeddable iFrame and a no-code Magic Link, and Shopify is on the list of connections.

2. Yoti

Yoti gives shoppers a menu of options. Alongside facial age estimation, there's a reusable digital ID app, an ID document scan, and Yoti Keys, a passkey that saves someone's age result so they can reuse it on other sites that accept it. Yoti has an app in the Shopify App Store, and you choose from your Shopify admin whether the check covers the whole store, certain pages, or just the checkout when there's an age-restricted item in the cart.

For selfies, Yoti runs a liveness check against photos, videos and masks, then deletes the image once the check is done. For documents, it only uses the date of birth and deletes the data afterwards. The catch is that all those options come with decisions. The digital ID route asks the shopper to scan a QR code and share a credential from the Yoti app, which is easy for people who already use Yoti and less so for a first-time buyer who'd have to install it mid-checkout. If you want one simple default path, expect to spend some time working out which methods to switch on and in what order.

3. Persona

Persona's selfie age estimation uses a guided capture that snaps the photo automatically, looks at several frames to catch spoofs, and checks the estimate against age cutoffs and safety buffers you configure. When an estimate is unclear or close to the cutoff, Persona escalates the user to a government ID check, which can be paired with a selfie match, and the selfie data can be deleted as soon as the estimate comes back.

Persona is a general identity platform, and age estimation is one check among many. That suits bigger teams, because they get a lot of control over how checks fit together. For a smaller store, it means more setup: you configure the estimation, the cutoffs and the escalation yourself inside a broad platform, instead of switching on a ready-made age flow.

4. Incode

Incode runs its age estimation model right on the shopper's device, either in a phone app or a regular browser. Biometric data, raw or processed, never leaves the device. You get a simple pass or fail against your threshold, while some session metadata goes to Incode's servers to check for tampering and injection attacks. The capture screen gives real-time tips on position and lighting, and the whole check usually takes a few seconds.

If an estimate is close to the threshold or inconclusive, Incode sends the user to another of its age check methods, or to a route you choose. The privacy design does have a downside for your support team. Since no image ever reaches you, there's nothing to look at when a customer disputes a refusal, and all you can really do is point them to the fallback method.

5. Veriff

Veriff launched selfie-based age estimation for situations where a document check doesn't fit, like users who don't have an accepted ID. Results come back in seconds, and you can use it through an API, a web flow or mobile SDKs, with support for 50 languages and dialects. That language coverage is a real plus if you sell into several countries from one checkout.

Veriff's launch material leaves the call on each estimate up to you. Its developer documentation returns the estimate as an exact age number and doesn't describe a built-in buffer or an automatic step-up to a document check, and age estimation needs its own separate integration. So you'll need to set your own rule for estimates near the limit and build whatever path a borderline shopper takes next.

6. VerifyMy

VerifyMy comes at the problem from a different angle than everyone else on this list. Its main method uses the shopper's email address. They confirm they own it with a one-time passcode, and VerifyMy estimates their age from that address's digital footprint, with no selfie or document needed. If that doesn't work for someone, there's facial age estimation, ID scanning, credit card, mobile number and name-and-address checks to fall back on.

VerifyMy's WooCommerce app first tries to confirm age from the order details or a previous successful check, then lets the shopper pick a method if that fails. Anyone who doesn't verify at checkout gets an email reminder with a unique link 15 minutes later. That keeps the checkout short, but it also leaves you holding orders you can't ship until the shopper comes back, which is a different kind of drop-off to keep an eye on.

Where you put the check affects search and sales

Picking a provider is only half the decision. The other half is where the check shows up on your site, and here SEO and conversion want the same thing.

If you put a gate in front of the whole store, before any page content loads, every visitor hits the gate first. That includes the shopper who just clicked a search result for one specific product. And if your product and category content only renders after someone gets past the gate, search engine crawlers may not see much of it, which leaves pages that used to rank for product terms with less to rank with.

A check that only runs at checkout, and only when the cart has an age-restricted item in it, keeps your catalogue open to crawlers and browsing shoppers alike. It also asks for a selfie when the shopper has already decided to buy, which is a much better moment than the first second of their visit. The usual tips for optimizing the checkout in your online store carry straight over: show how many steps are left, keep the age check on the same page or in a pop-up, and don't send the shopper off to another domain.

Some stores do need to gate earlier, for example where local rules restrict access to the product pages themselves. In that case, a quick estimate is a much lighter gate than a document request, and it's worth tracking drop-off at the gate as its own number in your analytics. The common reasons visitors leave an ecommerce website usually show up in your session data before they show up in revenue, and an age gate is one of the first places to look.

So which one should you pick?

For most stores, it comes down to the shopper near the limit. Every service on this list can wave an obvious adult through quickly. The difference is what a 19-year-old, or a young-looking 26-year-old, runs into next, and whether that next step happens inside your checkout or somewhere else.

A provider that handles that escalation within the same session gives you the fewest chances to lose an order. Before you sign with anyone, run through the borderline path yourself on your phone. That's the route your youngest legitimate customers will take every time they buy from you.
