How to Track Reddit Rankings for Your SEO Keywords

Intro

Search for almost any "best [product]" keyword and you'll find a Reddit thread on page one. Sometimes it sits right above your own page.

Most teams track their own positions every day and ignore the threads around them. That's a missed opportunity. A Reddit thread that ranks for your keyword reaches the same searchers you want, and unlike a competitor's page, you can join the conversation.

Timing matters too. Threads move in and out of the top 10, and many subreddits lock comments once a thread is six months old. Join while a thread is ranking and still open, and your answer sits in front of searchers for months. Find it too late, and there's nothing left to do.

This guide shows you how to set up Reddit tracking in Ranktracker, catch new threads as they enter the top 10, decide which ones are worth your time, and measure what you get back.

Why Reddit threads belong in your rank tracking

Reddit ranks best on keywords where searchers want opinions from real users. Those also tend to be the keywords closest to a purchase.

Keyword pattern Example Why Reddit ranks
best [product] for [use] best project management software for small teams Searchers want firsthand recommendations
[brand] vs [brand] asana vs trello People compare real experiences
[product] review, is [product] worth it is notion worth it Searchers don't fully trust vendor pages
[topic] reddit project management tool reddit Searchers ask for Reddit by name
[product] alternative monday.com alternative Users share what they switched to

Google also adds a "Discussions and forums" box to many of these results, which pulls threads from Reddit and other forums. Ranktracker records discussion-style modules and AI Overviews as SERP features, so you can see when they appear for your keywords.

That's why a Reddit thread at #3 for your money keyword deserves the same attention as a competitor at #3. The difference is that you can add your answer to the thread.

Step 1: Build a keyword list where Reddit already ranks

Start with keywords tied to revenue. You don't need to check every keyword you track.

Here's how to build the list:

  1. Pull your commercial keywords from your existing Rank Tracker project, or find new ones in Ranktracker's Keyword Finder. Focus on the patterns in the table above.
  2. Run each keyword through the SERP Checker. It shows the top 100 results for a keyword, so you can see exactly where Reddit URLs sit.
  3. Keep every keyword where a reddit.com URL shows up in the top 10. Add keywords where Reddit sits between 11 and 20 as well, since those threads are one good week away from page one.
  4. Check the location and device that matter to you. A thread can rank on mobile in the US and miss page one on desktop in the UK.

For example, let's say you sell project management software. The SERP for "best project management software for small teams" might show an r/projectmanagement thread at #4 and an r/smallbusiness thread at #9. Both go on your list.

This works in the opposite direction from Reddit keyword research. There, you mine Reddit for keyword ideas. Here, you start with a keyword you already care about and find the thread that owns it.

Step 2: Add reddit.com as a competitor in Rank Tracker

Next, put Reddit inside your daily tracking.

In your Rank Tracker project, add reddit.com as a competitor website. Rank Tracker lets you track as many competitors as you like, so Reddit doesn't take a spot you need for your real competitors.

Now every keyword in the project shows Reddit's position next to yours. You'll usually see one of three patterns:

  • Reddit ranks above you. The thread is taking clicks you want. These are your priority threads.
  • Reddit ranks below you. Joining the thread still helps, because some searchers scroll past your page to read what Redditors think.
  • Reddit ranks and you don't. The thread may be your fastest way onto page one for that keyword.

Ranktracker checks the full top 100 every day and keeps the full daily history. That lets you see how long Reddit has held a position, which tells you whether a thread is a lasting opportunity or a one-week spike.

Step 3: Log the exact thread URL behind Reddit's position

Tracking reddit.com as a domain tells you that Reddit ranks. It doesn't tell you which thread. Google can swap one Reddit thread for another while Reddit's position stays exactly the same.

That's why you need a simple log. Each time you review a keyword, record the thread behind Reddit's position:

Keyword Position Thread URL Subreddit Thread age Open or archived Last comment Joined?
best project management software for small teams 4 reddit.com/r/projectmanagement/... r/projectmanagement 5 months Open 3 days ago No
asana vs trello 2 reddit.com/r/productivity/... r/productivity 2 years Archived 18 months ago Can't

A shared spreadsheet is enough. Export your Rank Tracker data to CSV once a week, paste in the new positions, and fill in the thread details by hand.

The "Open or archived" column saves you the most time. Many subreddits archive threads after six months, which blocks new comments and votes. It's a community setting, so check each thread instead of assuming.

Step 4: Catch new threads as they enter the top 10

The best time to join a thread is soon after it starts ranking. It's newer, it's usually still open, and the order of the top comments isn't settled yet.

Here's how to catch those moments:

  • Turn on alerts. Switch on ranking change notifications and daily email notifications in Rank Tracker, so a Reddit move lands in your inbox.
  • Check the URL on every big move. When Reddit jumps more than three positions, or appears on a keyword where it wasn't ranking before, open the SERP and see whether a new thread has replaced the old one.
  • Watch for new SERP features. When a discussion module or AI Overview appears on a keyword in your list, there are usually more Reddit threads on the page, and more of them are worth a look.

Step 5: Decide which threads are worth joining

Not every ranking thread deserves a reply. Score each one before you spend time on it.

Check Good sign Skip it if
Position Top 5, or top 10 and climbing Below 20 and falling
Status Open for comments Archived or locked
Activity New comments in the last few weeks No activity in months
Intent The question is one your product answers The thread is off-topic for you
Subreddit rules Allows recommendations or brand mentions with disclosure Bans self-promotion outright

A thread that passes all five checks is worth a careful reply this week. A thread that fails on status or rules comes off your list, however well it ranks.

Step 6: Join the thread without getting filtered

A reply only helps if people can see it. Most large subreddits filter comments from new accounts or accounts with little karma, and those removals are often silent. Your comment looks live to you and stays invisible to everyone else.

Before you reply:

  • Use an account with real history in that subreddit or in related ones.
  • Make sure the account isn't shadowbanned. A free Reddit shadowban checker from UpvoteNet takes a few seconds.
  • Read the subreddit rules and pinned posts.

When you reply:

  • Answer the original question first, in plain language.
  • Say who you are. "I work at [brand]" earns more trust than posing as a neutral user.
  • Compare honestly, and say when a competitor fits someone's situation better.
  • Add a link only if it helps the reader. Reddit marks outbound links as nofollow, so the value comes from clicks and visibility rather than link equity.

Step 7: Measure what each thread does for you

Tracking doesn't stop once you post. Here's what to watch for each thread you join:

  • Thread position. Keep tracking Reddit's position for the keyword in Rank Tracker. As long as the thread holds the top 5, your reply keeps getting seen.
  • Your comment's position. Open the thread while logged out, sort by Best, and see where your reply lands. Top comments get read. Buried ones mostly don't.
  • Referral traffic. Filter Google Analytics 4 for reddit.com referrals to the pages you linked.
  • Branded search. Watch branded impressions in Google Search Console. A rise after a good thread is a positive sign, though it's hard to credit a single thread.
  • AI answers. For keywords where Rank Tracker records an AI Overview, check whether your brand now shows up in it.

A 30-minute weekly Reddit tracking routine

Once the setup is done, the ongoing work is small. Here's a routine that fits into half an hour a week:

  1. Review alerts (5 minutes). Check Rank Tracker notifications for Reddit position changes on your keyword list.
  2. Log new threads (10 minutes). Open each changed keyword, find the thread behind Reddit's position, and add it to your log.
  3. Score and pick (10 minutes). Run new threads through the five checks and choose one or two to join.
  4. Update results (5 minutes). Record the replies you posted and what last week's threads did for traffic and position.

Conclusion

Reddit threads already compete for your keywords. Tracking them turns that competition into a list of places where your answer can show up.

Start small. Add reddit.com as a competitor in your Rank Tracker project today, then log the threads behind Reddit's positions for your top 10 keywords this week. Pick the single best open thread and join it with a genuinely useful reply.

Next week, check two things: whether the thread held its position, and where your reply sits in the comments.
